Christmas Starts with the Table

The table is often the first thing people see when they arrive for Christmas lunch. Before the food, before the candles are lit, it already says: we have made a place for you.

Our favourite starting point is one patterned linen piece. Let it set the mood, then use the plates and glasses you already love. These three ideas draw on the festive table linen we have shared in our Christmas Pinterest archive.

A little red against white

A white Christmas Ornaments tablecloth leaves plenty of room for the food and decorations to stand out. Add red candles or a bowl of bright apples. Keep the napkins simple, and stop there. Repeating one colour is enough to make the whole table feel considered.

Snowflakes after dark

For an evening gathering, try Christmas Night in navy or red. The pale snowflake detail shows up beautifully beside plain white crockery. Clear glasses and warm candlelight finish the setting without covering the pattern.

A festive strip down the centre

If you love the look of your wooden table, leave it visible. A Christmas Night runner gives the table a festive centre while leaving space at each place. It is also an easy way to refresh a plain tablecloth you already own.

Keep branches and decorations low enough to see over. Set serving dishes on the table before your guests arrive so you can check there is room for the meal, not just the photograph.

Choose for your table, then for your guests

Measure the tabletop before choosing a cloth. A drop of about 20 to 30 cm on each side is a useful starting point for a festive setting. Our tablecloth size guide walks through the sums.

Choose a pattern you will be pleased to unpack next winter too. That familiar cloth can become part of the occasion, just like the serving dish or the recipe everyone asks for.
